A Wine Valley Artilce for Your Viewing

Gourmet Wine Gift Baskets

Another heady gift basket that can bring smiles is the gourmet wine gift basket. A sure-fire hit with boss, family, friends or business associates, they toast any occasion with ?lan and encourage the art of hedonistic living! Weddings, Christmas, Thanksgiving, New Year?s, housewarming or birthday, get-well-soon wishes ? all are appropriate occasions for these generous gift baskets.

Elegant gourmet wine baskets offer interesting wines with a snack or food combination that heightens dining pleasure. You can select your own match or pick a ready-made basket according to your budget or preference, and the occasion. Usually, light wines work with easy snacks and heavy wines for heavy food. Highly spiced foods restrict your choices, as the alcohol in the wine can clash with the spices on your palate. It?s all about trusting your taste buds while experimenting, as well as looking at the region?s favorite combinations.

These baskets usually cater to universal tastes, with red, white or dessert wine or champagne accompanying crackers, cookies and chocolates. Interesting packages can also be created with assorted nuts, tortillas, chips, pretzels, smoked salmon, gourmet sausages, cheese, jelly, savory breads and dips. Other medleys include sauces, purees, extracts, syrups and spreads, exotic coffee or tea, oil and vinegars, herbs and spices, ethnic food ranging from Indian and Japanese to Spanish and Italian, or desserts and sweets.

Ready-made meals with that perfect wine can be presented as a surprise gourmet wine gift offering. Soups, salads, grilled or cooked meats, casseroles, fondues, pies, pastas, desserts and an accompanying wine or two can instantly lighten up an evening. So a Chicken Picata with Chardonnay or Kung Pao chicken with a cool Gewurztraminer, chocolates with port or apricot custard with Sauternes can bedazzle your friends like never before!

The baskets can be elaborately decorated with ribbons and satin trimmings. They can even include hand-painted glasses, wineglass charms, hand-carved wine art, wine ceramics or other wine accessories to give it that exclusive touch. Delectable, divine or plain sensational, you can never go wrong with a gourmet wine basket unless it is bequeathed to someone who abstains from alcohol or whose religion forbids it. Check your foreign business contacts? cultural background before presenting something that should ideally cheer and uplift.

Light up the candles; lay out the charm, soft music and gourmet wine basket magic ? that taste of wine offers a taste of Heaven!

Today's Red Wines Article

Not So Essential Wine Accessories

As a follow up to my last article, ?Essential Wine Accessories? I thought it would be interesting to touch on a few accessories that may not be quite so essential but are fun or handy to have regardless.

Wine pourers are traditionally made from clear plastic and fit into the neck of a bottle of wine. The pouring surface is designed to prevent dripping when pouring, for those with an unsteady hand, by returning any excess wine back to the bottle. This can be very handy for those interested in preventing red wine stains on any item of furniture that is not already red in color!

Decanters allow red wine to breathe, enhancing flavor and bouquet. Typically created from glass or crystal, decanters have a narrow neck, which leads to a very wide base. This wide base allows more of the wine to come in contact with the air, letting it breathe before consumption. Decanters are not a necessity but are a practical addition for those interested in enhancing the flavor of their red wine.

A bottle tote is also a practical accessory to have when going out on a picnic or to bring a cold bottle of wine to a dinner party. Usually made from neoprene (the same material diving wetsuits are made from), bottle totes can keep a bottle cool for hours, something handy if you are going to be out and don?t want that nice chilled bottle of Sauvignon Blanc to warm up before you have had a chance to drink it.

How many times have you been at a dinner party and have had to juggle your plate and your glass? Mingling plates are the perfect solution for those dinner or cocktail parties when a third hand is essential. With a slot and hole on the side of the plate, a wine glass stem can be inserted so that the glass is resting on the side of the plate. This leaves your hand free to eat without needing to balance a glass in your hand or setting it down on a table.

My personal favorite not so essential accessory is a wine chiller or wine refrigerator. Wine chillers can come in a variety of colors, finishes and capacities to fit your desires. Usually they are small enough to fit on or under a kitchen counter and most have gauges, which allow you to set the chilling temperature according to the type of wine being chilled. That way if you are using your wine refrigerator to store and chill red wine (because red wine should best be served at a temperature of 60 degrees Fahrenheit), the temperature can be adjusted so that bottles are not chilled as if they were white!

The list of wine accessories can appear to be endless, and to write about them all in this article would take too long and bore you to death. So I hope that the few I have touched upon are helpful in deciding which not so necessary wine accessories are more necessary than others.

COLEMAN FOR U.S. SENATE PRESS RELEASE: “COLEMAN FOR SENATE RELEASES WEBVIDEO REFUTING LIES FROM FRANKEN TV AD”

Thu, 14 Aug 2008 11:55:13 PDT
ST. PAUL – With Al Franken’s campaign lying about where Norm Coleman lives while working in Washington, the Coleman for Senate campaign today released a new webvideo to show Minnesotans the truth about Norm Coleman’s living arrangements. In Franken’s ad, he misleads Minnesotans by claiming that Senator Coleman rents a million dollar DC townhome for $600 a month. In reality, Senator Coleman rents one bedroom and a bathroom in the basement of the townhouse in question. “Frankly Misleading (Vol.

Calimocho, Say What?

Thu, 14 Aug 2008 10:02:16 PDT
A recent trip to Screen on the Green with some friends resulted in my first experience of a drink I had never heard of before (and for me that takes some doing), an unusual concoction of sorts that my friend Tiffany introduced me to. It’s called Calimocho (or Kalimotxo). I’m sure some of our European readers may have heard of this - Calimocho is a Basque inspired drink consisting of equal parts red wine and in this instance Diet Coke, over ice. I know, you are thinking this is a crazy notion,
